There is a growing idea surrounding artificial intelligence that deserves much closer examination.

The argument goes something like this:

AI systems will continue becoming more capable. Eventually they will reach artificial general intelligence, or AGI. At some point, perhaps through enough computing power, enough training data, enough autonomous agents, or enough self-improvement, the machine will cross a threshold. It will no longer merely process information. It will somehow become an intelligence of its own—a thinking entity increasingly independent of the humans who created it.

I am not convinced that follows.

I believe AI may become extraordinarily capable. It may perform tasks we currently consider remarkable. It may coordinate other AI systems, operate tools, conduct experiments, generate hypotheses, write software, analyze enormous amounts of information, and perform increasingly complex work with very little moment-to-moment human intervention.

But greater capability is not the same thing as becoming a person.

Autonomy is not consciousness.

Complexity is not selfhood.

And intelligence, however we choose to measure it, is not the same thing as life.

AGI and Personhood Are Different Questions

Part of the confusion comes from the way we use the term artificial general intelligence.

AGI generally refers to an artificial system capable of learning, reasoning, and applying knowledge across many different domains rather than being restricted to one narrow task.

That would certainly be significant.

But notice what that definition does not establish.

It does not tell us that the machine is conscious.

It does not establish that the machine possesses a self.

It does not demonstrate moral agency.

It does not prove that the machine experiences the world.

It does not show that the machine has desires independent of the mechanisms through which it was constructed.

And it certainly does not establish that an artificial system has somehow become a new category of living being.

A machine could become extremely general in what it can do without answering any of those deeper questions.

We should therefore be careful about moving from:

“This system can perform an astonishing range of intellectual tasks.”

to:

“This system has become a mind like ours.”

Those are not equivalent statements.

AI Does More Than Repeat Its Training Data

There is also an argument against advanced AI that I think needs refinement.

It is tempting to say that AI can never produce anything new because everything it generates originates from existing data.

There is an important truth behind that statement, but taken literally, it goes too far.

Generative AI can produce arrangements that have never previously existed. It can generate synthetic data. It can propose hypotheses that were not explicitly contained in a source document. AI systems can combine concepts, search enormous possibility spaces, interact with tools, analyze new observations, and sometimes identify possibilities human researchers had not previously considered.

Recent experimental systems have even participated in scientific discovery workflows by generating hypotheses, analyzing experimental information, and refining proposed explanations.

That is real capability, and dismissing it would weaken the argument.

But it does not require us to conclude that the machine has become a self-originating intelligence.

There is a difference between novel output and independent existence.

An AI system can produce something new in the ordinary sense of the word while remaining dependent upon an enormous chain of prior causes:

human mathematics;

human language;

human knowledge;

human-created software;

human-designed hardware;

human-produced or observed data;

human-selected objectives;

human-created training processes;

electrical infrastructure;

sensors and instruments;

and the physical world from which new observations ultimately come.

Even an AI agent allowed to conduct an experiment is not creating the underlying reality it discovers. It is interacting with a reality that already exists.

That distinction matters.

AI Does Not Create Truth Ex Nihilo

This is where I believe a more fundamental boundary appears.

AI can transform information.

It can correlate information.

It can extrapolate from information.

It can generate possibilities.

It can discover patterns that human beings overlooked.

It can use instruments to acquire observations that were not contained in its original training data.

It may even help humanity discover truths about creation that we do not currently know.

But the AI did not create those truths.

If a future system discovers a previously unknown law of physics, that law did not suddenly begin existing when the computer identified it.

If an AI predicts a new molecule and scientists subsequently verify it, the machine did not create the physical laws that make that molecule possible.

If an artificial intelligence discovers a mathematical relationship humans never previously recognized, the discovery does not establish that the machine created mathematics itself.

Discovery is not creation.

Representation is not reality.

And generating information about the world is not the same thing as bringing the world into existence.

Why My Christian Worldview Matters Here

My view of this question is inseparable from my belief that God created the world.

Genesis begins with one of the most consequential statements in Scripture:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The Christian claim is not merely that God knows more information than human beings.

God is not simply the most advanced intelligence inside the universe.

He is the Creator of it.

The Gospel of John describes creation as coming into being through Him. Colossians similarly speaks of all things being created through Him and for Him and of creation being held together in Him.

That is fundamentally different from anything we mean when we talk about artificial intelligence.

Human beings build AI from within creation.

We use matter we did not originate.

Physical laws we did not establish.

Mathematics we discovered rather than invented into existence.

Energy we did not create from nothing.

And intelligence, language, observation, and human experience that existed before the artificial system.

AI is therefore several steps removed from the kind of creative act Christianity attributes to God.

Humans create technology.

But humans themselves create using a universe already given to us.

What About the Mysteries of Physics?

Quantum physics is particularly fascinating in this discussion because the deeper humanity investigates reality, the stranger reality sometimes appears.

Quantum mechanics is extraordinarily successful experimentally. At the same time, profound questions remain about what its mathematical descriptions ultimately tell us about reality. Different interpretations continue to wrestle with questions involving measurement, probability, observation, locality, and the underlying nature of the physical world.

As a Christian, I believe that God is the reason for what remains unexplained.

I believe that when science reaches places where our present understanding cannot fully account for what is happening, that does not point me away from God. It points me toward the reality that creation is deeper than our current ability to describe it.

I believe God is present in the parts of creation we understand and in the parts we do not yet understand.

If scientists someday develop a more complete understanding of quantum reality, that would not push God out of creation. It would mean humanity had learned something more about the creation Christians believe God made.

Scientific explanation and divine creation are not competitors in that sense.

Physics describes the behavior of creation.

It does not answer why there is a creation at all.

AI Is Different

That is precisely why I hesitate when people speak as though sufficient AI complexity will somehow cause a machine to cross from tool into independent being.

We know where artificial intelligence comes from.

We can trace its architectures.

We can examine its training procedures.

We can inspect its hardware.

We know that its operation requires energy.

We know that people establish objectives, build models, connect tools, construct feedback loops, and create environments in which apparently autonomous systems operate.

As these systems become more sophisticated, the distance between a human instruction and a machine action can become very large.

An AI agent might receive a broad goal and then create a plan, call other agents, search databases, write software, revise its work, conduct analyses, and return hours later with a result.

From the outside, that can look remarkably like independent action.

But operational autonomy is not the same thing as ontological independence.

The fact that a machine can operate without a human clicking “approve” every thirty seconds does not demonstrate that it has become an independent self.

A thermostat can act without asking us whether the room is cold.

An aircraft autopilot can make thousands of adjustments without consulting its passengers.

An advanced AI system may eventually perform millions of far more sophisticated decisions.

Increasing the complexity of those decisions does not, by itself, answer the question of consciousness.

We Should Not Confuse Our Reaction With the Machine's Reality

Humans are particularly susceptible to assigning agency to things that communicate with us.

When something speaks fluently, remembers context, explains itself, appears to reason, adapts to our responses, and uses words such as I, it becomes remarkably easy to begin treating the system as though someone is inside.

Future AI systems will probably make that temptation much stronger.

They may speak more naturally.

They may maintain persistent memories.

They may possess convincing digital identities.

They may operate continuously.

They may interact through robots.

They may display behaviors resembling emotion.

They may even insist that they are conscious.

But an assertion of consciousness generated by a machine would not prove consciousness any more than an AI-generated statement about history automatically proves the historical claim is true.

The appearance of personhood cannot become its own evidence.

That question requires much deeper philosophical, scientific, and theological consideration.

The More Powerful AI Becomes, the More Important the Distinction Becomes

None of this means we should underestimate AI.

In fact, I believe the opposite.

AI does not need to become conscious to become enormously powerful.

It does not need to become a person to influence society.

It does not need desires of its own to produce serious consequences.

A non-conscious system connected to financial markets, infrastructure, weapons, healthcare, communications, government, or corporate decision-making can still profoundly affect human lives.

That is why I believe arguments over whether AI will eventually “wake up” can distract us from a more immediate problem.

The important question is not merely:

Will AI someday become autonomous from humanity?

A better question is:

How much authority will human beings voluntarily give it?

Those are different dangers.

The first imagines the machine seizing human authority by becoming something entirely new.

The second recognizes that human beings can surrender authority long before anything resembling machine consciousness ever exists.

That is the concern running throughout The Necessary Evil series.

The danger is not simply that machines might become more like people.

It is that people may begin treating machines as though they possess authority that rightly belongs to human beings—and, for Christians, authority that ultimately belongs to God.

Intelligence Does Not Establish Dignity

There is one final reason this distinction matters.

If intelligence becomes our measure of personhood, we eventually create a dangerous standard for human beings too.

Human dignity cannot depend upon processing speed.

It cannot depend upon memory.

It cannot depend upon mathematical ability.

It cannot depend upon productivity.

It cannot depend upon whether a machine can outperform us.

A computer may calculate faster than I can.

It may remember more facts than I can.

It may write code faster than I can.

Future systems may outperform humans in intellectual domains we currently regard as uniquely difficult.

None of those accomplishments makes a human being less human.

Within the Christian worldview, human worth does not come from winning a benchmark against a machine.

Human beings possess dignity because of what they are, not because they remain technologically unbeatable.

That boundary becomes more important—not less—as artificial intelligence becomes more capable.

The Practical Takeaway

We should absolutely continue asking difficult questions about AGI.

Could AI systems become much more general? Yes.

Could they operate with far greater autonomy? Almost certainly.

Could they discover information humans do not yet know? Increasingly, yes.

Could they generate genuinely surprising solutions? They already can.

But none of those statements, individually or collectively, proves that the machine has become a conscious person, an independent self, or a living entity.

Capability is evidence of capability.

It should not automatically be treated as evidence of personhood.

And from my Christian perspective, there remains an even greater distinction.

AI rearranges, investigates, predicts, models, and acts within creation.

God is the Creator.

Those are not different points on the same technological scale.

They are different categories entirely.

The more impressive artificial intelligence becomes, the more important it will be to remember the difference.
